Sean Dyche, coach of the English football club Everton, expressed dissatisfaction after the goalless draw against Newcastle United over a penalty decision that was not awarded. The debate centered on a tussle between Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Dan Burn in the second half. In the 67th minute, a collision occurred in the penalty area when Calvert-Lewin, attempting to capitalize on a rebound from goalkeeper Nick Pope, made contact with Burn's leg and fell to the ground. From Dyche's perspective, this situation should have resulted in a penalty, noting that similar actions elsewhere on the pitch would also be deemed fouls. However, referee Craig Pawson decided against awarding a penalty, and the video assistant Chris Kavanagh also saw no reason to review the action on the field. The rationale: Calvert-Lewin accidentally struck Burn's leg. Dan Burn himself expressed concern after the match that the decision could have gone the other way: "If the referee had awarded the penalty, it probably wouldn't have been overturned." The incident sparked particular discussion, as a comparable situation in the first half had resulted in a penalty for Everton, which was, however, thwarted by Jordan Pickford. Despite the frustration over the missed opportunity, Dyche remains hopeful that his team will have more luck with such decisions in the future.
