Euston Station in London, a central hub for travelers heading to Birmingham, Manchester, and Glasgow, is facing a fundamental transformation. After repeated criticism of the station's "outdated" conditions and the replacement of information boards with large advertising screens, British Transport Minister Louise Haigh has now ordered a reversal. In a five-point plan presented by Network Rail and the UK Department for Transport, the focus is on measures to alleviate overcrowding and improvements to toilet facilities. Criticism of the new advertising screens, which led to congestion in front of smaller, less visible information displays, was particularly vocal. Therefore, these will now be switched off to evaluate their usefulness. "Euston Station has simply not been good enough for passengers for too long," said Haigh. The aim is to increase travel comfort and simultaneously enhance the passenger experience through these measures. Another focus is on improving the station's daily operations and procedures. Network Rail and train operators, including Avanti West Coast and West Midlands Trains, have been tasked with developing immediate improvements. Additionally, there will be a meeting next week between the leadership of Network Rail and Louise Haigh to discuss the long-term plans for Euston. The removal of advertising spaces is the first step in managing the congestion, Haigh further emphasized. The company JCDecaux, which operates the advertising spaces, has already been asked for a statement. The station's redesign is urgently needed to improve the unpleasant conditions for travelers, Network Rail and the Transport Department explained. Particular attention is being paid to the boarding and alighting processes. Last-minute track changes often caused passengers to rush hectically and hazardously through the station. The expansion of Euston, including a larger concourse, is currently under discussion and depends on additional government funding as well as the final decision on the high-speed rail line HS2. In conclusion, the five-point plan aims to enhance the reliability of infrastructure and train services, although details on this are yet to be provided.
