The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will announce $4.3 billion in funding for 25 new climate change mitigation projects on Monday. The aim of this initiative is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 971 million tons by 2050, which is equivalent to the emissions of five million households over 25 years. Among the beneficiary areas is Nebraska, which will receive $307 million to reduce agricultural waste and increase energy efficiency in residential and office buildings. Pennsylvania will receive $396 million to reduce industrial pollution and create approximately 6,000 jobs. Leirion Gaylor Baird, the Mayor of Lincoln, Nebraska, expressed her enthusiasm: 'This is a truly exciting day for Lincoln and Nebraska, as well as for other cities and states nationwide that are working so hard to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and leave a better, brighter future for our children,' she said in a conversation on Friday. Ms. Baird stated that the funds could help reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Lincoln by 77 percent by 2050. Other regions receiving funds include Southern California for the decarbonization of freight vehicles, Michigan and several indigenous tribes for new renewable energy projects, the Atlantic coastal states for carbon sequestration through wetland preservation, Alaska for transitioning from oil heating to heat pumps, and the Nez Perce Reservation for building retrofitting. These funds are part of the Climate Pollution Reduction Grants Program, a $5 billion fund financed by the Inflation Reduction Act. This act was a significant achievement of the Biden administration and allocates $396 billion for climate and clean energy funding. In the first phase of the program, states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia were eligible to receive $3 million each to draft climate action plans in 2023. All but five states – Florida, Kentucky, Iowa, South Dakota, and Wyoming – submitted plans in March.
