In a high-profile court case against U.S. Senator Robert Menendez, prosecutor Paul Monteleoni presented a detailed account of corruption allegations that weave a tight web through business transactions and international relations. Monteleoni urged the jurors to focus on what he termed a "clear pattern of corruption." He laid out a chronology of events to support his arguments. Once Menendez learned that his wife Nadine would receive a payment, he proactively intervened multiple times, according to the prosecutor. For instance, as the ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Menendez wrote a letter to Egyptian officials to release $300 million in aid. He also called a senior figure in the Department of Agriculture to protect the monopoly of a New Jersey Halal meat supplier who had offered his wife employment. Following these interventions, businessman Wael Hana, together with another affluent acquaintance, began paying Mrs. Menendez a generous salary, Monteleoni said. Gold bars, car loans, and other perks followed as the Senator helped the businessmen avert criminal prosecutions. In return, prosecutors repeatedly tried to counter the defense’s arguments. For example, Menendez's lawyers claimed their client was unaware of the benefits his wife had received. This was not credible, Monteleoni argued, presenting text messages and Google search histories that, in his opinion, showed Menendez knew exactly what his wife was receiving. "You don't become the chair of the Foreign Relations Committee by being clueless," he emphasized. Monteleoni is expected to finish his closing arguments on Tuesday morning. Following this, Menendez’s attorneys will have their final opportunity to address the jurors. Menendez appeared upset as he left the court on Monday. "The government is intoxicated by its own rhetoric," he stated. He added that the prosecutors were attempting to bring to the jurors' attention conversations they had never heard.
