In one of the most significant border infringements since the start of the Gaza war, Israeli forces and the Lebanese Hezbollah militia have engaged in heavy firefights. In the latest exchange, the Israeli army reported that around 100 fighter jets had bombarded over 270 targets in southern Lebanon. These claims have not yet been independently verified. Hezbollah countered by stating it had fired over 320 rockets at nearly a dozen Israeli military bases and positions. Both parties to the conflict proclaimed the success of their attacks. Israel justified its actions as a preventive defensive measure against Hezbollah rocket attacks, while Hezbollah stated it was retaliating for the killing of Fuad Shukr, a senior Hezbollah commander, last month in Beirut. At least for the time being, the feared massive conflict has not materialized. Both parties later indicated that they did not intend to further escalate the violence. Elsewhere in the war, the United States has continuously deployed naval units to the region to support Israel and deter Iran, including two aircraft carrier groups and a guided missile submarine. Meanwhile, Israel's search for Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas leader, has proven to be extremely challenging. His skill in conducting a military campaign while simultaneously evading capture or killing has so far denied Israel a decisive victory. In central Gaza, Palestinians fled from the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital after the Israeli military again ordered the immediate evacuation of parts of Deir al-Balah.
