The recent hype around artificial intelligence (AI) has not only captured the imagination of investors but also delivered some of the most remarkable returns in recent years. While technology companies experienced a significant surge during the pandemic, it is now AI stocks that are dominating the markets. Leading the charge is a company that has seen an impressive 1,100% increase in value since October 2022. This phenomenon illustrates the transformative power of AI, which has electrified investors around the world. However, the widespread adoption of AI technologies requires more than just powerful graphics processing units (GPUs). The race to build AI data centers is in full swing, attracting significant investments in infrastructure, network equipment, and energy. Sam Altman of OpenAI plans to establish seven AI data centers across the United States, each with a massive energy requirement of 5 gigawatts. To achieve this, extensive investments amounting to several trillion dollars are necessary, underscoring the urgency of creating new semiconductor manufacturing facilities. The financial giant Goldman Sachs has categorized the AI sector in its latest report, listing companies along with their respective returns. Particularly impressive is the utilities segment, which has recently flourished due to strong investments in data centers. In Northern Virginia alone, 11,000 megawatts of electricity will be required by 2035, already triggering investments of $5.2 billion in transmission lines and coal power plants. Another company in the spotlight is ARM Holdings. The British firm supports well-known names like Amazon and Google with processor designs and ranks sixth on Goldman Sachs' list of key AI stocks. Although ARM lacks its own production, it excels with its extensive portfolio of chip designs, positioning it as a major player in the AI data center sector. Despite potential risk from the emerging open-source RISC-V architecture, ARM remains a central figure in the AI sector and continues to attract interest, as demonstrated by the former acquisition proposal by NVIDIA.
