Apple will unveil the long-awaited iPhone 16 this coming Monday. One of its standout features will be the new A18 chip, which is based on Arm's latest design architecture. This represents a significant advancement in the Cupertino tech giant's efforts to integrate generative artificial intelligence into its smartphones. The A18 will be based on Arm's V9 chip design, providing a considerable boost for the SoftBank-owned company. Arm CEO Rene Haas had previously stated that the V9 architecture brings in twice the licensing fees compared to the previous V8 generation. This implementation is particularly significant since the iPhone accounts for nearly half of Apple's total revenue. Arm benefits from a longstanding licensing agreement with Apple, generating revenue both through licensing and royalties. In May, Apple had already employed the V9 architecture for its latest line of M4 MacBook chips, which also promised substantial performance improvements. The first PCs with these chips are expected to be introduced in the coming months. Apple and Arm have not commented on the current developments. However, in June, Apple announced a range of new AI features under the term 'Apple Intelligence.' These include an enhanced Siri, the generation of custom emojis, and advanced photo editing capabilities. Additionally, Apple plans to partner with OpenAI and introduce a 'Private Cloud Compute' infrastructure to protect user data. The increasing computational demands from employing AI models on mobile devices make advancements in chip technology indispensable. 'Apple Intelligence' currently runs exclusively on the most advanced iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models with the A17 Pro chip, which is still based on the older V8 architecture. Since its successful IPO last September, Arm's stock has risen by about 70%, buoyed by diversification into PC, automotive, and industrial chips, as well as increasing investments in AI technology. Investors will closely follow the iPhone 16 presentation to gather more details about the new features and their phased rollout. Currently, a developer beta test of iOS 18.1, the update to iOS 18 that will bring 'Apple Intelligence' to the iPhone, is underway.
