A renewed assassination attempt on former President Donald J. Trump was thwarted by the swift and vigilant intervention of Secret Service agents. This troubling development raises new questions about the agency's overall ability to adequately protect the candidates entrusted to it. After sharp criticism following an attempted attack in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, the Secret Service significantly enhanced the security detail around Mr. Trump. These enhanced measures, which include additional agents and improved ground intelligence, may have significantly contributed to preventing the recent incident, according to current and former officials. Nonetheless, the fact that a shooter with a semi-automatic rifle and scope managed to get within approximately 300 to 500 meters of the former president reveals that many urgent issues uncovered in Butler remain unresolved. This underscores the challenges the Secret Service faces in an unpredictable and increasingly violent political landscape. As in Butler, the greatest problem seems to lie in securing the perimeter of the target location, even at venues such as Mr. Trump's estates. The shooter positioned himself in the bushes at the edge of Trump's golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida. A Secret Service agent who was scouting ahead of Mr. Trump on the golf course spotted the rifle barrel and initiated the subsequent actions, as explained by Sheriff Ric Bradshaw of Palm Beach County at a press conference on Sunday. Sheriff Bradshaw emphasized that Mr. Trump—one of the most polarizing figures worldwide—has a smaller security detail than that of a sitting president. This, Bradshaw noted, accordingly restricts the protective measures of the Secret Service and local partners. "At the current level, he's not the sitting president—if he were, we would have had the entire golf course surrounded," Sheriff Bradshaw explained.
