At its "Advancing AI 2024" event in San Francisco, AMD showcased its latest advancements in artificial intelligence. With a range of new developments, the company aims to capture market share from the leader Nvidia and its long-standing rival Intel. Central to the presentation were the new 5th generation AMD EPYC CPUs for servers, the Instinct MI325X AI accelerators, and the Ryzen AI PRO 300 processors for enterprise PCs. According to AMD, the EPYC 9965 chips offer up to four times faster video transcoding compared to Intel's current Xeon processors and a 1.6 times increase in performance per core in virtualized infrastructures. In the AI accelerator segment, AMD claims that the MI325X chip eclipses Nvidia's H200 in terms of memory bandwidth and capacity. AMD offers the enhanced performance in collaboration with Dell, Eviden, Gigabyte, HPE, Lenovo, and Super Micro Computer, who plan to integrate this chip into their platforms starting in the first quarter of 2025. The competition in the data center sector is intense, and both AMD and Nvidia are financially benefiting from the current boom. Nvidia increased its revenue to $26.3 billion in the last quarter, while AMD recorded a record revenue of $2.8 billion. Intel, on the other hand, is struggling with a 3% decline in its data center revenues and is working on a major turnaround. Outside the data centers, AMD also unveiled its new Ryzen AI PRO 300 processors, which are said to deliver superior performance compared to older Intel models. However, Intel has already announced the next generation of its processors, promising additional improvements. While both companies hope for a rise in PC sales through the integration of AI technology, current results are underwhelming. Current PC shipments are declining despite the excitement for AI PCs, but the forthcoming holiday season still offers manufacturers an opportunity to bring their innovations closer to consumers.
