A Decade of Change: Jokowi's Legacy and the Future of Indonesia

Joko Widodo, commonly known as Jokowi, seemed the epitome of hope and democratic renewal when he set out to become the President of Indonesia ten years ago. The former furniture manufacturer from Surakarta had worked his way up to become mayor and then governor of Jakarta before finally entering the country's highest office in 2014. In the following ten years, under his leadership, Indonesia experienced both remarkable successes and controversial developments. During Jokowi's tenure, Indonesia achieved significant economic growth and impressive infrastructure projects. He also managed to expand the national health insurance system, now benefiting over 90% of the population. However, these positive achievements were overshadowed by concerns about old patronage patterns and dynastic tendencies. Jokowi's successor will be Prabowo Subianto, a member of the old elite, whose political path raises some eyebrows. Prabowo, who chose Jokowi's son as his vice president, has in the past expressed proposals to reconsider Indonesia’s constitutional foundations, although interest in such plans seems to have recently waned. His transition to the presidency leaves many speculating whether he will continue or reverse the democratic progress of recent years. Jokowi leaves office with high popularity despite some critical voices. Controversial decisions in his later years include allegations of attempting to benefit his family and political circle through institutional changes. Nevertheless, Jokowi remains a symbol of progress and development for many. The future of Indonesia under Prabowo will show whether democratic institutions will emerge strengthened or weakened. Meanwhile, hope remains that the country will carry forward the achievements of the past decade as it faces the challenges of the future.
