Apple Inc. is on the verge of finalizing an agreement with the startup OpenAI to integrate its technology into the iPhone. This is part of a broader initiative to bring artificial intelligence features to its devices, according to people familiar with the matter.

Discussions about the use of ChatGPT features in Apple's iOS 18, the next iPhone operating system, are in the final stages, said the sources, who wish to remain anonymous as the information is confidential. Apple has also had negotiations with Alphabet Inc.'s Google regarding the licensing of the chatbot Gemini. These discussions have not yet led to an agreement, but are ongoing.

An agreement with OpenAI would enable Apple to offer a popular chatbot as part of a series of new AI features that the company plans to announce next month. According to an April report from Bloomberg, talks with OpenAI have recently intensified. Still, there is no guarantee that an agreement will be announced immediately.

Representatives from Apple, OpenAI, and Google did not comment on the reports.
