The company was founded in 1984 and is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. Morningstar's history began with the goal of democratizing asset management. The founders, Joe Mansueto and Brian D. Singerman, believed that every investor should have access to the same information and ratings as Wall Street professionals. Morningstar initially provided investment research products to banks and investment companies but quickly started selling directly to individual investors. The breakthrough came in the late 1980s when Morningstar introduced the star rating system, which rates investment funds based on their performance and risks from 1 to 5 stars, with 5 being the highest rating.
