BMW has initiated a comprehensive recall for the all-electric models of the Mini Cooper SE after potential safety issues in the battery system were identified during quality checks. The company confirmed that the high-voltage batteries could leak, which might lead to moisture ingress and a resulting insulation fault. This fault could cause the vehicle to roll to a slow stop and, in extreme cases, even result in a fire.

The recall affects nearly all first-generation Mini Cooper SE vehicles produced between November 2018 and January 2024. In Germany alone, around 39,000 vehicles are affected by this issue.

To minimize the risk of a vehicle fire, BMW initially relies on a software update that integrates a new diagnostic function. This is intended to detect battery malfunctions early and safely discharge the battery to prevent a fire risk. If further investigations confirm leaks, BMW will repair the affected battery housings.

Customers who see the warning message "Drive possible. High-voltage system" in their vehicle or are otherwise made aware of the issue are urgently advised to immediately visit an authorized Mini workshop. According to BMW, no accidents or injuries related to this defect have been reported so far.

The recall affects approximately 150,000 vehicles worldwide and concerns the entire production cycle of the first generation Mini Cooper SE. BMW has already taken steps to address the issue and ensure the safety of the affected vehicles.
