After hundreds of successful launches in recent years, a rocket from the private space company SpaceX encountered problems shortly after launch and disintegrated. The attempt to ignite a second stage in the orbit of the Falcon 9 rocket failed, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced on the news service "X". Subsequently, a "RUD" occurred, which stands for "rapid unscheduled disassembly".

The US aviation authority FAA has temporarily prohibited further launches of SpaceX rockets following this incident. The FAA has ordered an investigation into the failed launch on July 11, as stated on the agency's website. Consequently, other missions, including flights for the US space agency NASA and with private space tourists, may be delayed. "The resumption of flights is contingent upon the FAA determining that all systems, processes, and procedures related to the malfunction do not pose any threat to public safety," the FAA further announced.

After problems during the ignition of the second stage, the rocket experienced issues shortly after liftoff on Thursday evening (local time) and broke apart. The rocket was supposed to deploy 20 Starlink internet satellites into orbit from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. However, these satellites did not reach the required altitude. SpaceX announced on its website that contact with all satellites has been lost. The satellites will re-enter the Earth's atmosphere and disintegrate. There is no danger to other satellites or the public, according to the statement.

According to US media, after a series of around 300 successful launches of Falcon 9 rockets, it is the first time since 2015 that such a rocket has disintegrated. In 2024 alone, around 140 Falcon 9 rockets have already been launched, according to SpaceX, reported the "New York Times".

The incident represents a setback for SpaceX, which has carried out numerous successful missions in recent years. The FAA investigation and the resulting delays could impact planned missions and affect confidence in the reliability of the Falcon 9 rockets.
