Samsung Electronics has announced that its latest laptop model, which uses Microsoft Windows and Qualcomm chips and is equipped with artificial intelligence, has problems running some software programs, including popular games.

The Galaxy Book 4 Edge, which launched on Tuesday in the USA, South Korea, and some other markets, includes Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor and runs on a version of Microsoft's Windows 11 for PCs, which is based on technology from the British company Arm.

On Wednesday, Samsung published a list of applications on its Korean-language product page that are currently considered incompatible with the new laptop or cannot be installed. The listed programs include some Adobe software as well as popular games such as "League of Legends" and "Fortnite.

Samsung did not specify detailed reasons but referred to operating conditions on the laptops related to Windows 11 Arm and the Qualcomm processor. "We have asked app developers for improvements and will review the schedules for app improvements to provide continuous updates," said Samsung.

Microsoft, Qualcomm, and the software manufacturers did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

For decades, PCs with Microsoft's Windows have typically used Intel processors. However, PC manufacturers – including Microsoft itself in some of its devices – have recently highlighted the use of Qualcomm's Snapdragon chips. Qualcomm, which previously focused on smartphone chips, has optimized its products to incorporate AI features such as generating images and summarizing texts without an internet connection.

Samsung stated in the product description that the Galaxy Book 4 Edge uses the "fastest, most powerful Snapdragon for laptops.

In principle, switching to a new processor could cause compatibility issues for software developed for an earlier processor, although it could not be determined whether this was a factor in this case.

Here is the translated heading:
"Other PC brands use the same setup with Snapdragon processors based on Arm architecture to power new models with AI capabilities. It was not immediately known if other brands report the same software compatibility issues as Samsung.

The term AI-PC generally refers to personal computers that are capable of performing AI computations with their own internal hardware, rather than delegating tasks to specialized computers in remote data centers.

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said this month in Taiwan that by 2028 about 80% of all PCs will be AI PCs.
