Marc Andreessen Supports Elon Musk in Recruitment for Government Reform Agency
Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen supports the recruitment for Elon Musk's new cost-cutting division in the U.S. government.
Marc Andreessen, co-founder of the influential venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, plays a key role in staffing the new "Department for Government Efficiency" (Doge), an advisory board led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy for the upcoming Trump administration. The committee aims to reduce US government spending by up to $2 trillion.
Although Andreessen does not hold a formal position at Doge, he is said to be actively involved in identifying and evaluating candidates for senior roles, as confirmed by two people familiar with the recruitment process. He utilizes his extensive network in the tech and startup world.
Efforts to fill Doge posts began in mid-November when the Doge account on X (formerly Twitter) publicly sought applications. "We need highly intelligent, revolutionary advocates of lean government ready to work 80+ hours per week on unattractive cost-cutting," read a post.
Andreessen has supported Musk for years and made significant investments in his companies, including xAI and SpaceX. He was also a prominent financier in Musk's acquisition of platform X for 44 billion US dollars. In addition to his support for Musk, Andreessen also enjoys direct access to President Trump, whom he publicly endorsed in July – a notable departure from the long-standing preference for Democratic candidates in Silicon Valley.
An insider explained that Andreessen now spends a lot of time at Mar-a-Lago, Trump's estate in Florida. The entrepreneur has also repeatedly criticized the "woke" orientation of some AI companies as well as the censorship allegations against social media platforms—stances closely aligned with Musk's rhetoric.
Andreessen and Trump share an affinity for cryptocurrencies, which played a significant role in the 2024 presidential campaign. Andreessen's investment firm has invested billions of dollars in crypto projects, while Trump benefited from the financial support of the industry.
Trump seems to be influenced by Andreessen's ideas. In a recent post on his platform Truth Social, the President announced his intention to nominate Gail Slater to head the Justice Department's Antitrust Division, adopting Andreessen's term "Little Tech." "For years, Big Tech has stifled innovation and suppressed the rights of so many Americans as well as Little Tech," Trump wrote.
With the alliance between Andreessen, Musk, and Trump, new alliances are emerging that promise profound changes in the US government and technology sector.
