The Online Forum Reddit and the AI Company OpenAI, Supported by Microsoft, Announce a Strategic Partnership to Collaborate on Content Level. This openness includes that Reddit content must be accessible in order to promote human learning and to support online communities and self-determination.
The collaboration envisages that content from Reddit forums will be incorporated into the ChatGPT chatbot developed by OpenAI. OpenAI will use the Reddit data API to provide real-time data that will then be integrated into ChatGPT. This is meant to help users discover and engage with Reddit communities. In return, Reddit will be able to deploy AI tools for its users and moderators.
Another component of the agreement is that OpenAI will act as an advertising partner for Reddit in the future. However, financial details of the partnership were not disclosed.
Brad Lightcap, COO of OpenAI, emphasized the benefits of collaboration: "We are very excited to work with Reddit in order to expand ChatGPT with uniquely up-to-date and relevant information and explore ways to enhance the Reddit experience with AI-powered features." Steve Huffman, co-founder and CEO of Reddit, added: "The integration into ChatGPT confirms our belief in a connected internet, helps people discover more of what they are looking for, and assists new audiences in finding community on Reddit."
OpenAI has recently formed several partnerships with media industry companies to further train its AI systems and to supply ChatGPT with more real-time data. These include collaborations with the Financial Times and Dotdash, the owner of Investopedia.
Reddit itself has targeted Google in the search for new monetization opportunities and provides the Alphabet subsidiary with access to platform content for 60 million dollars a year.
The news of the collaboration with OpenAI was well received by investors: Reddit stock rose by 11.74 percent to 63.00 US dollars in after-hours trading on the NASDAQ.
