The young hopeful of the Colorado Avalanche, Matt Stienburg, is in the spotlight following an incident during the game against the Tampa Bay Lightning. He will have to attend a player safety hearing on Thursday. Stienburg, 24, drew criticism after committing a foul against Erik Cernak of the Lightning in the second period of the 2-5 home defeat. This was penalized with a five-minute major as well as a game misconduct. The Lightning defenseman could not return to the game after this collision. As a third-round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, Stienburg made his league debut on October 16. So far, he has not recorded any points in eight games but has stood out with 16 hits and 22 penalty minutes. Prior to his rise to the NHL, the native Canadian from Nova Scotia gained three years of experience at Cornell and recorded a total of 13 points and 63 penalty minutes in the 2023/24 AHL season with the Colorado Eagles.
