In the context of the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, several international leaders took the opportunity to speak with China's President Xi Jinping. Xi, who had skipped the event in India last year, returned to the global spotlight at this meeting. Before the official sessions at the Museu de Arte Moderna, Xi met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The meeting with Albanese took place a few months after his visit to Beijing, which aimed to resolve long-standing trade disputes. These disputes had led to the blockage of billions worth of Australian exports, despite China being Australia's largest trading partner. Albanese emphasized that the work done so far to normalize relations showed progress. Trade was flourishing again, benefiting both countries as well as their economies and people. Furthermore, they intended to collaborate more closely on energy transition and climate protection. Xi Jinping also expressed optimism, stating that the relations between the two nations had entered a new phase. He also urged Australia to create a non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese companies. This renewed focus on trade relations takes place ahead of Donald Trump's inauguration, who plans to impose high tariffs on Chinese imports. Albanese stated that Australia would not interfere in bilateral disputes between the US and China. Meanwhile, advanced technologies are being developed as part of the AUKUS partnership with the US and the UK. Xi also held initial talks with British Prime Minister Starmer. According to Downing Street, Starmer addressed sensitive issues, including Hong Kong, human rights, and the war in Ukraine.
