The United Kingdom has imposed new sanctions on 18 Russian oil tankers and four liquefied natural gas ships, marking the largest wave of sanctions to date against the country's so-called "shadow fleet." This fleet is accused of employing unfair practices to circumvent western restrictions. The British government is working closely with maritime authorities to demand that Russian ships with questionable insurance documents disclose their insurance status when crossing the English Channel. It is warned that any support for Russian "malicious activities" could potentially lead to sanctions. In recent months, the number of tankers transporting their cargo without regular western insurance has increased, despite Russia's opposition to such restrictions. The new sanctions prohibit the affected tankers from accessing British ports and maritime services, bringing the total number of sanctioned Russian oil tankers to 43. Among the blocked ships are the NS Bora, Atlas, and Moskovsky Prospect. According to the British government, these tankers transported oil worth an estimated £4.9 billion last year. Additionally, the Russian gas company Rusgazdobycha has been sanctioned. British Foreign Secretary David Lammy emphasized the necessity of combating Russian "malicious activities" at all levels, whether through illegal tactics for war financing or cyber-attacks. The Russian Embassy in London has not yet responded to requests for comment on the new sanctions.
