The assassination of a high-ranking Hamas leader in Tehran and a senior Hezbollah commander in Beirut is currently causing increasing tensions in the Middle East. Iran has blamed Israel for the attacks and announced retaliation, which could lead to an alarming escalation. The situation is tense, and fears of a broader regional conflict are growing. Following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, a senior Hamas leader, in Tehran, Iran has threatened direct action against Israel. Haniyeh was killed after attending the inauguration of the new Iranian president. While Israeli leaders did not comment, Israel was immediately blamed for the attack by Iranian and Hamas representatives. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader, has reportedly ordered retaliation against Israel, according to three Iranian officials. The spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Nasser Kanaani, stated that Tehran is not interested in escalating regional conflicts but considers punishing Israel necessary. Tensions are further escalating because the killing of Haniyeh occurred shortly after an Israeli attack in Beirut that killed Fuad Shukr, a senior Hezbollah commander. These incidents have further fueled already high tensions between Israel, Iran, and their regional proxies. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah announced that the conflict with Israel has reached a new phase and threatens massive retaliation. For months, Hezbollah and Israel have been engaging in tit-for-tat attacks, raising fears of a broader war. On Monday alone, an Israeli airstrike killed two people in southern Lebanon. The World Health Organization has already delivered 32 tons of emergency medical supplies to Lebanon in preparation for a potential escalation. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that his country is in a multi-front war against the "Axis of Evil" Iran and is prepared for any scenario. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant briefed U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III on the readiness of the Israeli army to defend against potential threats from Iran and its proxies. Meanwhile, frantic diplomatic efforts are underway to prevent a larger war. U.S. President Joe Biden will convene his national security team to discuss developments in the Middle East. Additionally, the foreign ministers of the G7 nations have called for de-escalation to avoid further escalation. Amid the tensions, Western governments have urged their citizens to leave Lebanon immediately. Canada, France, and other countries are also advising their citizens to avoid traveling to Iran or Palestinian territories. Several international airlines, including Delta, United, and Lufthansa, have suspended their flights to and from Israel, leaving many Israelis stranded abroad.
