In an exciting political development in South Korea, the Constitutional Court will begin reviewing the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol on Monday. The background is his controversial attempt to impose martial law on December 3rd. According to a court spokesperson, the initiation of the proceedings is set to coincide with the investigations during which Yoon is to be questioned later in the week, as reported by the Yonhap news agency.
The opposition-dominated parliament already decided on the impeachment on Saturday. Now, the decision regarding Yoon's future presidency lies with the court, which has up to six months to reach a verdict. The charges could also include sedition, as the imposition of martial law was only short-lived.
An investigative team, consisting of the police, the Ministry of Defense, and an anti-corruption agency, plans to subject Yoon to questioning on Wednesday. Confirmation from the investigator's office was initially unavailable.
Notably, Yoon did not comply with a summons for questioning in connection with a separate investigation by the prosecutor's office on Sunday, as Yonhap further reports. Modern Financial Markets Data
