SpaceX, the company of tech billionaire Elon Musk, has emerged as the dominant force in space. Thanks to the rapid growth of its Starlink satellite network, Musk controls nearly two-thirds of all active satellites orbiting the Earth. Recently, SpaceX launched its 7,000th Starlink satellite, further expanding its immense constellation that provides high-speed internet globally. In just three years, the number of Starlink satellites has more than sextupled. Yet, the end is not in sight: SpaceX plans to launch an additional 42,000 satellites. Starlink is now active in over 100 countries and enjoys usage by more than three million customers who receive the service via a special ground station. With ambitious expansion plans, Musk intends to cover even more countries in the coming years to ensure global coverage. However, countries like China, Russia, and North Korea are not currently on the waiting list. The increasing influence Musk has gained through SpaceX and Starlink has now attracted critical voices. With over 62% of all active satellites under his control, Musk's influence in spaceflight and communications is unmatched. "Between Tesla, Starlink, and Twitter, my head might house more real-time data on the world economy than anyone else," Musk once tweeted. Indeed, this is a considerable concentration of power. Recently, the company made spaceflight history: The private mission Polaris Dawn set a new record for the distance of a manned mission from Earth since the Apollo era and conducted the first private spacewalk. Additionally, a message was sent from space via the Starlink network. On September 14, SpaceX sent 21 more Starlink satellites into space aboard a Falcon 9 rocket. This marked the 85th launch of the year and the 7,000th launch of a Starlink satellite. Thirteen of these satellites are equipped with 'Direct to Cell' capabilities, which can provide direct mobile connections without cell towers. Musk recently announced that T-Mobile customers will soon be able to access the internet directly via Starlink satellites. By the end of 2024, T-Mobile users will no longer have to fear dead zones. The technology uses satellites with special modems that function like cell towers in space, allowing users to send text messages, make calls, and browse the internet without special hardware or apps. While Starlink and its satellite launches are in the spotlight, SpaceX has even bigger plans. The company is working on NASA's Europa Clipper mission, which aims to explore one of Jupiter's moons. This complex mission requires switching between the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rocket configurations.
