The United Nations Security Council convened on Tuesday during the annual General Assembly summit in New York to discuss the war in Ukraine. The meeting, initiated by Ukraine and its allies, aimed to stress that the conflict remains a global priority, even in the face of other pressing conflicts in Gaza, Sudan, and Myanmar.
President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine addressed the Council in a brief speech, appealing to its 15 members to continue their support for his country's fight against Russia, which began its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
"Russia is committing an international crime. This war cannot simply be ignored; it cannot be appeased through talks. Action is required," Zelensky told the Council. "Russia can only be brought to peace through coercion."
Zelensky also reported information indicating that Russia plans to attack three Ukrainian nuclear power plants. "We have evidence of this. If Russia is prepared to go to such lengths, it means that Moscow acknowledges nothing of value," he added.
He explained that he had developed a new victory plan based on the principles and values of the UN Charter, without disclosing detailed information. A peace conference is planned, to which he intends to invite all countries, including China, as Russia’s most powerful partner, and India, which has declared itself neutral.
Zelensky's speech took place ahead of several meetings this week, during which he plans to present his "victory plan" to U.S. President Joe Biden and other American officials. So far, he has withheld the specifics of this plan from the public. Moreover, Zelensky has called on the U.S. and other allies to allow Ukraine to use long-range missiles to conduct strikes deep into Russia. Modern Financial Markets Data
