Qualcomm recently surprised the technology world with the launch of the Snapdragon X chip for mid-range AI desktops and laptops. This latest addition to the Snapdragon X processor line builds on the successes of previous models such as Snapdragon X Plus 8-Core, Snapdragon X Plus, and Snapdragon X Elite. This innovative SoC (System-on-Chip) is manufactured using a 4-nanometer process and features an 8-core Oryon processor as well as a graphics unit and a neural processing unit (NPU). The NPU accelerates AI applications with 45 trillion operations per second, making it ideal for Microsoft's vision of AI-supported PCs, which are expected to hit the market in the first quarter at a price of around $600. AI PCs, which include an additional processor component for AI applications, offer enhanced features such as personal assistants and automated tasks — and significantly improved battery life. Qualcomm chips based on Arm Holdings designs promise longer use without frequent recharging. SoCs equipped with modern multi-core CPUs, excellent graphics, and global network capability highlight the performance of Qualcomm Snapdragon platforms, enabling fascinating augmented reality experiences, brilliant camera features, and secure 4G and 5G connections. Qualcomm aims for a stronger presence in the AI capabilities of laptops and desktops, moving away from its core area of the smartphone industry. This diversification of revenue streams is also intended to expand Qualcomm's AI presence and poses a serious competition to Intel's Core 5 120U processor, which is also used in mid-range PCs. Qualcomm's long-term goals include a seamless transition from a communications company for the mobile industry to a processor company for the intelligent edge. The expansion in EDGE networks offers transformation opportunities for connectivity in cars, business spaces, homes, smart factories, and next-generation wearables. AI is to be used to meet the increasing demand for products and services that drive digital transformation in a cloud economy. Especially in the automotive sector, Qualcomm is driving trends such as connected vehicles, the transformation of the in-car experience, and electrification forward. Qualcomm recorded a record increase in automotive revenues of 68% to $899 million in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2024, driven by new vehicle model content based on the Snapdragon Digital Chassis platform. This marks the 16th consecutive quarter with double-digit growth in the automotive sector.
