More than 200 former employees of President George W. Bush, as well as Senators Mitt Romney and John McCain, have signed a letter supporting Vice President Kamala Harris. This move represents a significant shift within the Republican Party, shaped by the era of Donald J. Trump. Among the more prominent signatories are a former chief of staff, a legislative director, and a deputy campaign manager from McCain's team. Many of them had already supported President Biden during the 2020 election. While some now work for organizations like The Bulwark and the Lincoln Project, which oppose Trump's leadership of the Republican Party, their opposition to Trump's candidacy remains steadfast. Particularly noteworthy is that notable Republicans such as Romney and Bush were absent from the Republican nomination convention last month. At the same time, the Harris campaign emphasized the support of these anti-Trump Republicans as well as former Trump staffers who have distanced themselves from him, during the Democratic convention last week. The letter from the signatories acknowledges ideological differences with Harris and Governor Walz, but states: "The alternative is simply not viable.
