Oscar Hope from Spain Conquers Netflix: "The Snow Society" on Record Course

With a gripping blend of drama and survival struggle, "The Snow Society" has swiftly streamed into the hearts of viewers. The thriller, the latest work from Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona, has already, just weeks after its release, become one of the most-watched non-English language films on Netflix. Boasting 75.1 million views since its release on January 4, it is already a success story for the international streaming service. The filmic strike hits hard as it follows the survivors of a plane crash in the Andes and the extreme decisions they make in the face of death. With its impressive depiction of a historical survival drama from 1972, Bayona delivered an intense and at the same time sensitive portrait of human depths. At its international premiere, "The Snow Society", as it is titled internationally, already convinced audiences and critics at the Venice Film Festival in September. Spain has now sent the two-and-a-half-hour film as its Oscar candidate in the category "Best International Film", where it faces significant international works such as "The Teachers' Lounge" from Germany, as well as the two other nominations "Perfect Days" and "The Zone of Interest". Netflix measures the success of its films and series based on the number of views achieved in the first 91 days. In this regard, "The Snow Society" is already performing exceptionally well and is expected to continue to climb the ranks of the streaming provider, with the record of the Norwegian surprise hit "Troll" at 103 million views certainly within reach. However, interpreting view counts as actual viewership numbers requires a nuanced approach, as Netflix calculates these figures from the ratio of hours watched to the total length of a movie. Nonetheless, even with this calculative limitation, it is indisputable that "The Snow Society" has secured itself a place in the annals of the streaming giant.
