Universal Display Corporation recently presented its third-quarter business results during a conference call. Steve Abramson, President and CEO, opened the conference with positive news: the company's revenue reached an impressive $162 million, with an operating profit of $67 million and earnings of $1.40 per diluted share. Nevertheless, growth has fallen short of initial expectations, and the forecast for the entire year has been adjusted to $625 to $645 million.
The OLED market still presents a positive outlook. The IT sector, in particular, is driving growth as demand for OLED AR/VR devices, smartwatches, smartphones, and more increases. OMNIA forecasts that mobile OLED PCs will grow to 69 million units by 2028, a 150% increase compared to 2024. This trend is already leading to significant investments in new production capacities.
Visionox has begun constructing a new Gen 8.6 OLED plant in Hefei, similar to BOE's Greenfield plant. Such projects raise total investments in new OLED factories to an estimated $20 billion. Alongside these developments, Visionox and Samsung are investing in new OLED module factories in Vietnam and elsewhere.
Progress is also evident in the automotive sector. Manufacturers like Ali, Lotus, and Zeekr are increasingly incorporating OLEDs in their new models, motivated by the OLED technology’s flexibility, low energy consumption, and excellent image quality. In the consumer goods industry, the introduction of devices such as the triple-folding Mate XT offers exciting prospects for the future.
Innovations in OLED materials are also advancing. Universal Display is continuously developing new materials to meet customer demands and is making significant strides in the introduction of a phosphorescent blue emission system. This advancement is considered groundbreaking for the industry.
With these promising developments, Universal Display looks optimistically to the future despite challenges posed by the pandemic and the adjustment of their revenue forecast.
