The past week held some surprises for the energy sector: While oil prices declined, natural gas prices recorded another upward trend. Key headlines involved natural gas exporter Cheniere Energy, which received approval for a major expansion project, as well as APA Corporation, which deepened its technological cooperation with Palantir Technologies. Developments at EQT Corporation, ExxonMobil, and BP also attracted attention. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) oil futures are now down 4.5% at $68 per barrel, whereas natural gas rose 2.3% to $3.363 per million British Thermal Units (MMBtu). Concerns about an extended Middle East conflict eased, and speculations about OPEC decisions also drove the decline in oil prices. In contrast, natural gas prices rose due to the expectation of colder temperatures and the associated higher heating demand. Cheniere Energy received the green light from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for the expansion of its Corpus Christi project. This represents a significant step to increase LNG capacity by about 10 million tons per year and supports the growing global demand for cleaner energy options. APA has expanded its partnership with Palantir Technologies and is relying on AI solutions to optimize production and supply chain management. This collaboration underscores the transformative power of AI in the energy sector. EQT announced a $3.5 billion joint venture with Blackstone Credit & Insurance, which strengthens their financial resources and promotes growth, particularly through strategic pipeline and storage projects. ExxonMobil is facing an FBI investigation regarding an allegedly company-commissioned hacking incident against environmental activists. This cyber-espionage aims to thwart legal challenges against ExxonMobil. Lastly, BP plans to achieve first gas deliveries by 2025 with its Cypre subsea project off the coast of Trinidad and Tobago. This project reflects BP's commitment to improving sustainability by utilizing existing infrastructure and promoting the country's natural gas production.
