The time between Christmas and Epiphany on January 6 provides an opportunity for a journey into the world of biblical narratives, which convey a message of unexpected and life-changing news for society. Particularly highlighted is the story from the Gospel of Luke, in which simple shepherds in their fields learn of the birth of Jesus. This portrayal, which distinctly differs from the events surrounding the royal visitors, prompts reflection on societal structures and the distribution of important news. In the 18th century, the artist Philip James de Loutherbourg immortalized this special scene in his work "The Angel Appearing to the Shepherds," which can be admired in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. Instead of fear, one of the shepherds shows worship and amazement towards the divine light. Notably, the painter refrains from depicting the angel, suggesting its presence merely through a golden heavenly ray. A comparison with other magnificent artworks like Domenichino's "The Adoration of the Shepherds" reveals different aspects of the story. Here, Mary reveals the newborn Christ child to the surrounding shepherds, accompanied by angels and musical accompaniment. It becomes clear that at that time, contrary to the prevailing social order, the news of the birth first reached those at the margins of the social hierarchy—those closely connected with nature and in constant readiness. As we contemplate these stories, the question arises of who corresponds to the shepherds in our world today. They are people who are often overlooked but may possess the ability to initiate significant changes. These reflections invite us to speak more openly about our own spiritual encounters and to better understand the synergies between animate and inanimate nature. Lorenzo Lotto's "Adoration of the Shepherds" brings these reflections into a new light. The warm, vibrant colors and the contrast between darkness and light illustrate a quiet intimacy, with special attention to the symbolic connection between the Christ child and a lamb. Here, the shepherds demonstrate that tender moments between the human and the divine are possible when we maintain openness to the unexpected. Thus, Christmas is not only a meeting of historical and religious moments but also an invitation to bring those sometimes overlooked by society more into the center of our attention.
