The social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, is preparing to be banned in Brazil after failing to meet a 24-hour deadline to appoint a legal representative in the country. This marks the latest peak in the dispute between Elon Musk and a supreme judge in Latin America's largest economy. In a statement on the platform, X announced on Thursday that users might soon lose access to the service, as the company would not comply with the orders from Judge Alexandre de Moraes. On Wednesday, de Moraes had ordered X to appoint a legal representative in Brazil; otherwise, the platform would be blocked. In response, X closed its office in Brazil last week, stating that the judge had issued a secret order to remove certain accounts or face fines or arrests. After the company’s legal representative resigned, his bank accounts were frozen. Musk, who describes himself as a radical advocate of free speech, has repeatedly clashed with de Moraes, whom he accuses of censorship. De Moraes, on the other hand, argues that his decisions are necessary to protect democracy from misinformation and hate speech, often propagated by far-right groups. On Wednesday, Musk posted an image of de Moraes behind bars and wrote that this would someday become reality. On Thursday, Musk doubled down, calling de Moraes a "criminal in judges' robes," disguised as if for Halloween. His deliberately provocative comments have not only stirred Brazil but also other governments around the world. The controversies surrounding Musk are not isolated. Other tech entrepreneurs like Pavel Durov, founder of the messaging platform Telegram, are also facing legal challenges, sparking a global debate on how social platforms should balance free speech and online safety. In Brazil, de Moraes has made a name for himself with his resolute stance against misinformation, albeit not without controversy. His supporters praise him for strengthening democracy in a critical time, while critics accuse him of unfairly suppressing conservative voices. The recent developments further underscore the tensions between Musk and various international governments. This could further weaken X, a platform already facing economic issues. Advertisers have increasingly withdrawn, as they do not support Musk's lax approach to moderation and his unpredictable statements.
