Mobile Giants Revolutionize Online Payment with 'Open Gateway'
Eulerpool Research Systems •Feb 26, 2024
In an era of digital transformation, Telefónica, Vodafone, and Deutsche Telekom are initiating a new round in online payment with the launch of the industry innovation 'Open Gateway' in Germany. At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona, they unveiled this platform, which has already been started with 42 global network operators and aims to optimize payment services through apps.
'Open Gateway' is the answer to the current demand for greater convenience and security in online financial transactions. The previously mandatory two-factor authentication through separate SMS codes could soon become a thing of the past. User verification would instead take place directly on the network by matching the customer-verified mobile number with the number from which the payment is initiated.
The collaboration with the technology platform Vonage enhances the impact of the project. With Vinted as the first German client to leverage the benefits of 'Open Gateway' for its second-hand fashion market, practical applications are already being realized.
Beyond simplifying transactions, 'Open Gateway' also offers simplification for app development. The need to adapt to various networks is eliminated thanks to standardized network interfaces, which should accelerate the development of digital innovations. Alfons Lösing from Telefónica Deutschland sees the potential in this technology to unlock new business models for mobile network providers and to break new ground in digital innovation.
