Takeaways NEW

  • Mark Carney is to run as the successor to Justin Trudeau for the Liberal Party of Canada.
  • The leadership election could have significant political consequences with a possible vote of no confidence against the current government.
Mark Carney, the former central banker, is reportedly poised to position himself in the race to succeed Justin Trudeau as leader of the Liberal Party and as the Canadian Prime Minister. According to insider sources, Carney plans to officially announce his candidacy once the party rules for the upcoming competition are established. The former Governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England is expected to run against Chrystia Freeland, the former finance minister, and Christy Clark, the former Premier of British Columbia, both of whom are seriously considering entering the race as well. Carney has already publicly stated that he is contemplating a candidacy following Trudeau's announcement of his resignation. As reported by CBC, he has now made up his mind and expects the support of more than 30 of the 153 elected Liberal Members of Parliament in the House of Commons. The Liberals plan to conclude the leadership vote by March 9, before Parliament reconvenes on March 24. The leaders of the three largest opposition parties have signaled that they would almost immediately support a vote of no confidence, which could lead to the government's downfall and trigger new elections. A future Prime Minister will have to confront Donald Trump, who is threatening with 25% tariffs and "economic violence" against the northern neighbor USA. Carney, 59, led the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013 during the global financial crisis before becoming the first foreigner to head the Bank of England until 2020, just as the country exited the EU. Prior to that, he gained experience in the Canadian public service and more than a decade at Goldman Sachs as an analyst and in the areas of Sovereign Risk, Debt Capital Markets, Corporate Finance, and Investment Banking. He currently holds various roles in companies and non-profit organizations, including as Chairman of Brookfield Asset Management and Bloomberg, as well as Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance at the United Nations. The leader of the Conservative Party, Pierre Poilievre, has sought to associate Carney with the unpopular Trudeau in light of Carney's anticipated candidacy by highlighting his past support for a carbon tax and labeling him as "just like Justin.
