The German-French tank manufacturer KNDS presented a technologically advanced version of the Leopard 2 battle tank at the Eurosatory defense exhibition. The new variant, the Leopard 2 A-RC 3.0, stands out with its unmanned and remotely controlled turret. This feature allows for the rapid and flexible exchange of guns within a caliber range of 120 to 140 millimeters. KNDS, the strategic alliance between German tank builder KMW and French defense company Nexter, is pursuing ambitious goals. The company views the Leopard 2 A-RC 3.0 as a 'bridge solution' to the future Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) and classifies it as a 'decisive technological precursor.' A particular innovation of the new Leopard 2 is the gun's construction, which does not penetrate the interior of the vehicle. This enables the three- to four-member crew to be entirely housed within a specially protected crew cell in the hull of the tank. This arrangement provides enhanced protection, significantly reduces weight, and simultaneously increases firepower against threats from close range and from the air. Additional security is provided by a remote-controlled weapon station for drone defense as well as a guided missile system for targeted engagement even while on the move. KNDS emphasizes the compatibility of these innovations. All currently deployed variants of the Leopard 2 can be upgraded to the new model's equipment standard. Special attention is given to the new 'Ascalon' gun, which is designed to be particularly powerful and flexible. Currently, KNDS has around 800 weapon systems deployed on the Ukrainian front or contractually bound for delivery to Ukraine. This positions the company as one of the most significant industrial supporters of Ukraine in the conflict against Russia. However, concerning the modernization of the Bundeswehr, KNDS shows concern over the hesitant orders. Frank Haun, the CEO of KNDS, already pointed out in the 'FAZ' that with the current inventory of around 300 operational battle tanks, there are limited defense capabilities sufficient only for Augsburg, but not for Munich or Berlin. Haun also expressed doubts about the procurement speed of the Bundeswehr under Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. Although a framework contract for 123 Leopard tanks has been signed, only 18 tanks have been ordered so far - a number that currently just matches the tanks delivered to Ukraine. Most of the 2023 orders have come from other NATO states.
