In recent years, numerous Haitian immigrants have found a new home in Springfield, Ohio. The city, known for its low cost of living and abundant job opportunities, has exerted a magnetic pull on the Haitian community. However, the rapidly growing number of newcomers has also stretched local resources to their limits and ignited tensions. Ahead of the presidential elections, Springfield has now become a flashpoint for heated debates over immigration.
In July, Republican vice-presidential candidate JD Vance used Springfield as a stage to criticize the Biden administration's border policy. That same month, Springfield's mayor and city manager appeared on the show "Fox & Friends," calling for assistance to cope with the influx they blamed on federal policy. During last week's presidential debate, former President Donald J. Trump repeated a debunked claim about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, alleging they were kidnapping and consuming pets.
What is behind the rise of Haitian immigrants in Springfield? Thanks to a successful initiative by the city's leadership and the Chamber of Commerce to attract new businesses, thousands of new jobs were created. Springfield, once a manufacturing hub, experienced a severe economic decline following the departure of many factories and jobs. By 2015, the population had shrunk to under 60,000, compared to about 80,000 in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Companies that had established themselves in Springfield faced an acute labor shortage. Haitians in Florida, Haiti, and South America heard from friends and family about Springfield's need for labor and began moving to the city to take jobs in warehouses, manufacturing, and the service sector. Employers urged the new arrivals to recruit more Haitians for work. What began as a small trickle swelled into a large wave after the Covid-19 pandemic, concurrent with heightened political and economic instability in Haiti following the assassination of the president in 2021.
