The analysis of the quantum computing market through an ETF is a tricky matter since only a few companies have a core business in this area. Most often, these are large, strong-performing companies in other industries with only peripheral projects in the quantum sector. As a result, the performance of an ETF says little about the actual state of the quantum computing industry. Meanwhile, challenges such as decoherence-induced errors continue to hinder the technology. Decoherence, arising from interaction with the environment, turns qubits into classical bits and impairs computing power. It is difficult to maintain quantum superposition long enough to carry out computational operations. Another hurdle is scaling, as more qubits entail greater error risks. Error correction approaches are also complicated by the quantum no-cloning theorem. Nevertheless, progress has been made: In 2022, Azure Quantum demonstrated that topological qubits are physically feasible as they are more stable and have a lower error rate. In 2023, researchers from Quantum AI made advances in error reduction for conventional qubits, although rare error-correlated events remain a stumbling block. Still, the industry faces significant open questions regarding economic usability. According to the State-of-Quantum Report by IQM, venture capital investments in quantum startups worldwide fell by 50% in 2023. The U.S., in particular, recorded a decline of 80%. Publicly traded companies in this sector have yet to become significantly profitable, with many facing the risk of delisting due to their stock performance. FormFactor is a promising company operating strongly in the quantum computing environment by providing cryogenic systems necessary for qubit coherence. Although its stock does not have a pure quantum focus, it offers significant industry exposure with a lower risk. Despite their position as a leading player, analysts see even greater potential for high short-term returns in AI stocks.
