In a significant step for the energy future of Great Britain, the first new nuclear reactor in more than three decades has been installed at the planned Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant in Somerset. This marks a critical advancement towards greater energy security in the United Kingdom, as this reactor will provide clean, low-carbon electricity for around three million households, supporting national climate goals.
The installation of the first of two 13-meter-long reactor pressure vessels represents a major progress. Once both units are operational, Hinkley Point C will meet seven percent of the UK’s electricity needs. This milestone follows the assembly of the steel dome in late 2023, an action last carried out in 1991 at the Sizewell B nuclear power plant.
UK Energy Minister Ed Miliband praised the progress as a significant technical achievement and an important milestone for the country's most advanced nuclear project. The commissioning of Hinkley to generate clean energy for six million households is a decisive step for long-term energy independence and a cost-controlling measure for citizens.
The reactor pressure vessel, a 500-ton steel container manufactured by Framatome in France, arrived at Hinkley Point C in February 2023. Using special technology, it was transported through a 19.5-meter-high loading bay and precisely positioned. Further equipment, such as the 25-meter-tall steam generators, is planned for 2025.
The work at the facility includes laying 360 kilometers of pipes and 10,000 kilometers of cables. Progress is monitored by strict controls from the Office for Nuclear Regulation to ensure high standards are maintained.
Stuart Crooks, Managing Director of Hinkley Point C, emphasized the importance of this progress not only for the project but also for the overall energy security of the United Kingdom. The experiences from building the first reactor are intended not only to advance future projects like Sizewell C but also to promote employment and skills in line with the UK’s growth agenda.
