The future of the legendary Old Trafford Stadium, home of Manchester United, is the focal point of a new initiative involving prominent figures, including Gary Neville, former defender and icon of the club. The task force, led by Chairman Sebastian Coe, aims to develop a comprehensive vision for the modernization of the stadium and its surroundings.
In addition to Coe, the task force also includes Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, Sara Todd, Chief Executive of Trafford Council, and Duncan Drasdo, CEO of the Manchester United Supporters Trust. The group is tasked with presenting recommendations for the future of Old Trafford by the end of December.
Neville emphasizes that the initiative aims not only to build the best stadium for Manchester United but also to achieve the greatest benefit for the entire region. "We are here to represent the local and broader community. There is enormous potential for something transformative," Neville told The Athletic.
To ensure transparency in the process, a survey will be sent to all Manchester United season ticket holders. "Fans will be asked to give their opinions on all aspects concerning Manchester United, the stadium, and its modernization," Neville explained, adding that the results will be incorporated into the broader planning.
What impresses most is Neville's visionary approach: "What I want to see is a Manchester United world around the stadium, full of opportunities, hope, and belief." He points to how projects like the old Wembley and the Olympic Park have triggered holistic changes in their regions and sees similar opportunities for Trafford Park.
Regarding the construction of a new stadium or renovation, Neville remains open: "Whether we create a new, larger version of Tottenham's stadium or replicate Real Madrid's Bernabeu – for me, both are a success as long as Manchester United gets a world-class stadium."
While financing details are excluded from the task force's responsibilities, Neville underscores the importance of a well-thought-out financing plan, especially since Sir Jim Ratcliffe, one of the world's most successful businessmen, is now part of United's ownership.
In conclusion, Neville appeals to the fans to express their opinions and seize the opportunity to be part of the transformation process. "Fans have a massive voice; they are the most important people in football," Neville stresses. Modern Financial Markets Data
