Freddie Freeman, first baseman of the Los Angeles Dodgers, returned to his team full of emotions after being absent for ten days due to the severe illness of his youngest son, Maximus. Three-year-old Maximus had suffered from Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that leads to temporary paralysis. Freeman described the intense days in the hospital, during which Maximus was connected to a ventilator. Despite the palpable emotional strain, Freeman was able to return with the positive news that Maximus is on the path to recovery. The courageous support from Freeman’s teammates, who wore blue T-shirts with the inscription '#MaxStrong', provided him with additional strength. During the emotional press conference, Freeman impressively explained how little Maximus had already begun rehabilitation after being discharged from the hospital. The doctors, particularly Dr. Jason Knight, significantly contributed to the improvement of his condition with their dedication. Freeman also received support from the broader baseball community: personal messages from managers like Pat Murphy (Milwaukee Brewers) and Torey Lovullo (Diamondbacks), as well as former teammates from the Atlanta Braves, helped him and his family during this difficult time. Back with the Dodgers, President Andrew Friedman, General Manager Brandon Gomes, and Manager Dave Roberts praised Freeman’s determination and emphasized the importance of family over sport. Returning to the field was a moving moment for Freeman, accompanied by his oldest son Charlie and numerous supportive gestures from his team. Despite this tragic experience, Freeman showed gratitude and optimism. 'Baseball is so far secondary when it comes to the well-being of my son,' he said, expressing his priorities and unwavering love for his family.
