In Nigeria, a terrible disaster has shaken the nation: In an accident in the northwestern region, in Jigawa State, at least 150 people have lost their lives and numerous others were injured due to the explosion of an overturned fuel tanker. The tragedy occurred as residents attempted to collect the leaking fuel—soon after, the explosion happened, its enormous scale impressively documented by images of towering flames. Already on Tuesday evening, the accident caused grief and dismay, which continued until Wednesday morning, when the fire was finally extinguished. The tanker, which had traveled approximately 110 kilometers from Kano State to the accident site, overturned after it had to avoid a collision with another vehicle. Nigeria's Vice President Kashim Shettima announced on Wednesday evening that the federal government would send urgently needed assistance to the affected region. It is not the first time that Nigeria has been shaken by such disasters: As recently as late summer, there was a similar accident with nearly 50 victims, and in 2020, similar incidents claimed the lives of well over 500 people. The head of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, Mele Kyari, recently spoke in a lecture at Obafemi Awolowo University about the challenges of energy security in the country. He pointed to rapid population growth, pipeline vandalism, and oil theft as significant factors. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of energy-saving and diversification measures to improve energy supply security.
