In a tragic incident that has shaken the business world, the CEO of one of the largest American health insurance companies, Brian Thompson, was violently killed. The 50-year-old executive of UnitedHealthcare was the victim of a shootout on Wednesday morning in front of a hotel in Midtown Manhattan. This hotel was where the investor conference of the parent company UnitedHealth Group was to be held. Andrew Witty, CEO of UnitedHealth, abruptly canceled the conference following the incident and informed the concerned crowd that they were facing a very serious medical situation, Bloomberg reports. The New York Police Department confirmed the shootout at the venue of the New York Hilton Midtown, with the conference already scheduled for 8:00 AM local time. Despite intensive efforts, the victim passed away at a hospital in Manhattan. Thompson assumed the role of CEO at UnitedHealthcare in April 2021 and previously held executive positions, including overseeing government programs and the Medicare and Retirement division. The late CEO joined the UnitedHealth Group in 2004 and leaves behind an impressive career. Despite the tragedy, UnitedHealth's stock rose by 1% on Wednesday morning after the company announced financial targets for 2025 on the preceding Tuesday. An increase in the adjusted earnings per share from $27.50-$27.75 in 2024 to $29.50-$30.00 for 2025 was projected. Further updates on this developing story will follow.
