The increasingly close connection between Donald Trump and Laura Loomer, a far-right activist and social media personality, is causing growing concern among Republicans. Trump's efforts to return to the White House seem to have taken on a self-destructive path by shifting towards the political fringes.
This week, Trump emerged battered from the debate against Kamala Harris. In response to attacks from the Vice President regarding his suitability for office, the former President lost his focus and revealed conspiracy theories about the 2020 election and migrants eating pets.
Consequently, Republicans are increasingly worried that Loomer's influence is significantly shaping Trump's mindset at a crucial phase of the campaign. The 31-year-old, known for her 9/11 conspiracy theories, disembarked from Trump's plane before the debate in Pennsylvania and accompanied him at the commemoration of the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York.
“[Trump] is increasingly surrounding himself only with people who tell him what he wants to hear,” said Brendan Buck, a Republican strategist. “He is drifting further from reality.” This week, Loomer attacked Harris' Indian heritage, claiming that in the event of an election victory, the White House would smell of curry and speeches would be handled via call centers.
Loomer's addition to the Trump camp has also drawn criticism from close allies on Capitol Hill. Lindsey Graham, Senator from South Carolina, called her "toxic," while conservative Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene questioned her experience and attitude.
Other Republicans have warned Trump that his drift into extreme territories could jeopardize his chances of winning over moderate and centrist voters in crucial states. Meanwhile, Republican strategists complained that Trump was relying on controversial associates like Matt Gaetz and Tulsi Gabbard instead of seasoned advisors.
The emergence of Loomer in Trump's entourage also raises questions about his campaign organization, which appeared to be very functional under the leadership of Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita. Trump's decision to bring back veteran Corey Lewandowski from the successful 2016 campaign also seems to have been ineffective.
Loomer, who has a substantial following on X, described the 9/11 terrorist attack as an "inside job" and has a history of Islamophobic and homophobic remarks. Her influence in the far-right corner of U.S. politics makes her a powerful voice alongside other conservative influencers such as Charlie Kirk. Modern Financial Markets Data
