In the sole vice-presidential debate of the 2024 campaign, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz faced off against Ohio Senator JD Vance. The discussions heavily focused on issues such as the economy, immigration, abortion, and the protection of American democracy. Contrary to previous debates often marked by personal attacks, the candidates this time endeavored to provide substantive arguments and introduce themselves to the voters. Signs of mutual respect occasionally emerged, such as when both candidates expressed their shared goals of improving childcare and reducing gun violence. Political analysts and social media observers noted that JD Vance, a Yale-educated lawyer, presented his arguments clearly and precisely, despite occasional distortions of the truth. He appeared more amiable on this occasion than depicted by the Harris camp. However, he stumbled when addressing former President Trump's attempt to overturn the 2020 election results. Vance dodged Walz's direct question regarding Trump's election defeat and defended Trump's role in the January 6 Capitol attack by claiming that Trump had peacefully transferred power to President Biden. Tim Walz initially appeared nervous and struggled to clear up misconceptions about his background. Nonetheless, as the debate progressed, he found his footing, especially when issues of abortion and health policy were discussed. Vance, on the other hand, attempted to exaggerate Trump's role in preserving the Affordable Care Act, despite Trump's repeated unsuccessful attempts to repeal the law. There were numerous reactions to the debate. Symone D. Sanders Townsend, MSNBC host and former press secretary for the Bernie Sanders campaign, commented, "Gov. Walz is not leading a passionate charge. If you agree with Vance on so many points, why should we vote for you?" Jen Psaki, former press secretary to President Biden, expressed, "I missed the magic and spontaneous authenticity of Tim Walz.
