At the age of 24 years and 222 days, former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher became the third youngest English goal scorer in Spain's La Liga this century. In the 39th minute of the match against Valencia, Gallagher found himself unmarked in the penalty area. Following a precise assist from Rodrigo De Paul, the English international kept his composure and slotted the ball past goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili to give Atlético Madrid a 1-0 lead. Atlético Madrid signed Gallagher during the summer transfer window for a fee of €42 million (£35.8 million, $54.7 million) from Chelsea, incorporating an undisclosed resale clause for the London club. Gallagher inked a five-year contract running until 2029. The transfer initially stalled, despite Gallagher having already agreed on personal terms with Atlético, traveling to Madrid, and passing his medical examination. The delay was caused by the failed transfer of Samu Omorodion to Chelsea, which required Atlético to generate funds through player sales to complete the deal. On Chelsea's instructions, Gallagher temporarily returned to the UK. It was only after Chelsea reached an agreement with Atlético regarding Joao Felix that Gallagher's transfer could finally proceed. Gallagher then traveled back to Madrid to finalize his move. Chelsea decided to sell Gallagher after he rejected three contract extension offers, each proposing two years with an option for a third, aiming to prevent a free transfer next summer. The match against Valencia was Gallagher's third appearance in Atlético's jersey. Having celebrated his first La Liga goal, it became evident that Gallagher had already been warmly welcomed into the Atlético family. The fans at Civitas Metropolitano joyfully chanted his name when prompted by the stadium announcer. Gallagher's consistent performance, whether through his tackling prowess, smart combinations with winger Samuel Lino, or offensive support for striker Alexander Sorloth, was greatly appreciated by the audience. When Diego Simeone made several substitutions with the score at 2-0, Gallagher seamlessly integrated on the right side of central midfield, contributing to his team's solid defense to secure the victory.
