The Irish businessman Colm McLoughlin, who played a key role in transforming Dubai Duty Free, has passed away at the age of 81. McLoughlin led the duty-free retail giant from 1983 until his retirement earlier this year, a span of more than four decades. During his tenure, Dubai evolved from a tranquil trading port into a bustling metropolis, known for its impressive skyline and international airport, with which McLoughlin remains inextricably linked.
Countless passengers traveling through Dubai International Airport could admire the vast selection of duty-free goods, from electronics to alcohol to luxury items. These were sold by a multicultural team in distinctive green suits and yellow ties, who communicated in multiple languages. "It is very Middle Eastern in nature," McLoughlin once said about the diverse market, when explaining the need for catering to different tastes.
In an official statement, the new CEO Ramesh Cidambi praised McLoughlin's contribution, which grew the company to a staggering business volume of 2 billion dollars with over 6,000 employees. This appreciation was reinforced by sincere condolences from Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, CEO of Emirates and Chairman of Dubai Duty Free, who highlighted McLoughlin's passionate and visionary leadership style.
Born in Ballinasloe, Ireland, McLoughlin gained his first experience in the duty-free trade at Shannon Airport. In July 1983, he arrived in Dubai with a small team to establish the then modest duty-free operation at the airport—a venture that turned a planned six-month project into 40 years. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, duty-free sales recovered quickly. McLoughlin managed to meet the needs of international customers, particularly Chinese travelers.
For the weary and adventurers among travelers, Dubai Duty Free always offered a variety of raffles with attractive prizes, ranging from millions of dollars to luxury vehicles.
