ChatGPT Search: New Dimension of Web Search Available for All Users

OpenAI expands its horizon: With ChatGPT Search, the company now offers a powerful AI-supported search experience for all users of its platform. In addition to existing capabilities, this innovation also includes some new features. The intelligent search automatically determines which queries should run through ChatGPT Search. Alternatively, users can directly select the new "Browse the web" icon in the ChatGPT interface. Not only are summarized answers from various online sources presented, but also curated content like embedded photos and YouTube videos are displayed. Originally launched in October, ChatGPT Search marks the latest step in the evolution of OpenAI's SearchGPT prototype, which debuted in the summer. Based on a specially optimized version of the GPT-4o model, the function provides information such as sports results, news, or stock prices, along with links to relevant sources. Users also have the option to refine the search through follow-up questions. Until recently a privilege of premium subscribers, the function is now accessible to non-paying users as well. OpenAI promises that the search has become not only faster but can also be set as the default search engine for web browsers. Additionally, the mobile user experience has been improved by displaying business information such as addresses and phone numbers more efficiently, for example in Apple Maps on the iOS app. Another highlight: The advanced voice recognition function allows using ChatGPT Search in Advanced Voice Mode, enabling users to access the latest web info on both mobile devices and desktops in the near future. My colleague Max Zeff was still undecided after testing the function earlier this year. However, OpenAI remains committed to continuously optimizing the service, as it is considered a key area for future growth. While some publishers express concerns about AI-supported search tools like ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews, fearing potential traffic loss, OpenAI emphasizes having considered feedback from partners about the relevance of articles and their summaries to further improve the service.
