The recent strike that brought Boeing's aircraft production in the Seattle area to a standstill may soon be resolved. Next Monday, 33,000 members of the International Association of Machinists union could initiate the end of the labor dispute with their vote. After intense negotiations, the union leadership announced on Thursday a contract agreement that provides a total salary increase of 44 percent over the next four years. In addition, there is a generous signing bonus of $12,000—sufficient incentives to offset wages diminished by inflation. Employees are encouraged to accept the offer and thus return to work, with the aim of bringing the storied American manufacturing back to its former glory. However, if the union members reject the offer, it could be interpreted as a destructive signal to Boeing. In addition to the salary increases, the contract also includes a doubling of employer contributions to the 401(k) retirement plan and the reintroduction of an annual bonus with a guaranteed minimum payout of 4 percent of the salary.
