The shares of the clothing company American Eagle Outfitters recently experienced a significant price drop after the company released its results for the third quarter of the fiscal year 2024. The word "write-downs" in particular caused alarm among investors, resulting in a 14% decline in the stock. In the third quarter, which ended on November 2, American Eagle recorded total revenue of nearly 1.3 billion USD. This represented a slight decrease compared to the previous year, although sales in the stores of both the main brand and the Aerie line increased. However, the company's margins suffered due to minor write-downs that became necessary to reduce excess inventory—a known risk in the clothing business, which is regularly confronted with the balancing act of fashion trends. The industry has overall performed strongly in this earnings season. Nevertheless, investors seemed surprised by the need for price reductions at American Eagle, despite these reductions being only minor. In contrast, the company's balance sheet appears solid, with 160 million USD in cash and no long-term debt. With an operating profit of 125 million USD so far in the year and a similarly high expected profit in the fourth quarter, the question arises whether the valuation relative to the market capitalization of 3.4 billion USD might be attractive. A bright spot remains the Aerie brand. For 2025, 45 new store openings are planned, representing significant growth from the current 317 stores. As Aerie accounts for about one-third of total revenue, this expansion could serve as a growth catalyst for American Eagle. While it's certainly not a surefire opportunity, the stock could still be of interest to bargain hunters. There is potential, even though the numbers and forecasts should be approached with caution.
