Josh Miller, the CEO of the Browser Company, showcases the advantages of his new AI browser Dia in a recent commercial. In a charmingly staged scene, he searches for gifts for his sisters and wishes to seek his wife's advice. However, instead of speaking with his wife himself, he delegates this task to the artificial intelligence of his new browser. Instead of having a personal conversation, the AI, as "Josh," drafts an email to his wife Valerie: "I hope you are well. I have found some interesting products on Amazon... Best regards, Josh." This formal message resembles correspondence with a distant colleague rather than a loving exchange with someone close. The Browser Company's commercial is part of a series of AI advertising campaigns that inadvertently illustrate how artificial intelligence can alienate people. Despite Dia's impressive ability to aggregate and interpret information from multiple websites, the advertisement shows how humanity is left behind. Miller himself could have made the exchange warmer, but the real issue is deeper. From personal interaction, through text messages, to conversations with AI—the human connection is becoming increasingly abstract. Even though the commercial is meant to highlight the impressive technical performance of Dia, it inadvertently tells another, more critical story about our interaction with technology.
