The stock market is experiencing an exceptional year, with the S&P 500 rising by an impressive 28% as of December 11, 2024. For optimists, this is the continuation of a positive trend following a 24% increase the previous year. While many companies are benefiting from this upward trend, not all share the same success. In the energy drink segment, Celsius, a provider of health-oriented beverages, has suffered a significant setback. The company’s shares have fallen by 45% this year, which may be enticing for bargain hunters hoping for a quick turnaround. However, before considering a purchase, three essential aspects of Celsius should be noted. First, Celsius has found its place in the highly competitive beverage market and particularly in the niche market for energy drinks, even though Red Bull and Monster Beverage dominate. With a focus on natural and functional ingredients, Celsius has filled a market gap and now holds an 11.8% market share according to Circana, making it the third most popular provider. Yet, despite the resounding success in recent years—with a 25-fold revenue growth between 2018 and 2023—challenges are rising from competitors now adopting similar strategic approaches. Additionally, Celsius is facing significant distribution problems. Revenue growth slowed to 29% in the first half of 2024 and even fell by 31% in the third quarter compared to the previous year. This revenue shortfall is primarily attributed to a drastic order reduction from key distribution partner PepsiCo, due to an inventory overhang valued at 124 million USD, according to CFO Jarrod Langhans. Even though Celsius management remains optimistic that these challenges will resolve on their own, they highlight the constant balancing acts required to align both inventory levels and market demand.
